"If you love animals and care about their well-being. Do it!"
My family and I have been volunteering for MABTR since 2022. We were looking into getting a Boston Terrier, and did an internet search finding MABTR. We noticed that MABTR had a booth at the upcoming Super Day in Cheyenne which we attended. We talked with the volunteers there and signed up to
become fosters!
We stay around because we get the joy of having new babies around as well as fulfilling their lives with a new wonderful home. It is so rewarding to see these babies grow and change from the time they come into rescue to the time they get settled into their new homes.
Initially, we volunteered as foster parents. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to become the Microchip Administrator which I have been doing for 2.5 years.
I have always had the need to help other people and do what I can for the greater good.
When I heard about the opportunity with MABTR I couldn’t resist. Plus, we were looking into getting a Boston anyway so I thought what better way to learn about the breed then to have them in our home as fosters.
The greatest challenge is seeing how poorly these animals have been treated or the lack of and imagining what their life was like before the rescue. It’s heartbreaking.
Our favorite part about volunteering is the variety of dogs that we get to foster. We have had dogs with physical disabilities, old dogs, babies, mixed breeds; you name it we’ve seen it. Each one with very different needs and personalities. Our sons really enjoys having the different dogs joining us in our home as well. They are just as active with helping with the dogs as anyone and they are great at it. It is also great because it helps our fur girls (both Bostons) get socialized with different dogs.
Occasionally, it is hard to let go of a foster baby we have in our home. There are times where we have become so attached to a particular baby and have wanted to keep them. The letting go can be difficult but that just means we are invested in their well being and want what is best for them long term.
We have lots conversations with many different people who ask how we volunteer and foster. Our answer is always the same. We do it for the dogs that don’t have a voice or any control over their lives. It is the most rewarding thing you’ll ever do.
