From the Front Line:Happy New Year!!! 2023 was one busy year for MABTR with 321 rescued in 12 months. The highest intake in one year to date. We are just 17 dogs away from another milestone of 5000 dogs saved as of Nov 2005. As of today, Jan 6, we have already taken in 6 new dogs. My prediction for 2024 is intakes for all rescues and shelters including MABTR will be at an all time high. We are seeing more owner surrenders (2023 was 38% of our intake) and shelter releases. Owners are struggling to care for their pets financially and are experiencing behavior issues due to the lack of socialization. Shelters are overwhelmed and adoptions are at a low so space is limited. In fourth quarter of 2023 we started to receive calls from breeders that cannot get puppies sold so they are no longer in need of so many adults as breeding stock. 51% (163 bostons) of our intake in 2023 were from puppy mills/breeders. We are so fortunate to have great supporters that we can pay our medical bills off each month. A big THANK YOU to all of you for that. However we cannot save lives without foster homes and adopters. Adoptions have slowed down extending the length of time a dog is in our care however the waiting list of dogs needing our help keeps growing. If you have ever considered housing a boston short term while a forever home is found this is the year to take action. We are desperate for petless foster homes too. A great way to get your fix without long term commitment. Some dogs just prefer not to have to share their space and human with other four legged friends. Now time to share our 2023 finances. Income: $225,567.10 from adoption fees, Boston bay sales, fundraisers, and donations. *This does include $12,112 of uncollected adoption fees (this would be recent adoptions or 2023 dogs still in foster care). Expenses: $215,801.62 from medical care, pet supplies, postage, printing, fees (cc, licenses), marketing (website, fundraising, Boston Bay items), and insurance. *this includes a $9,598.35 surplus carried over from 2022. Cost per dog came to $600.80 (slightly lower than last year) *Unfortunately we are getting in more owner surrenders that result in high medical bills. I want to personally THANK the MABTR family members that transport, foster, volunteer, and manage this amazing organization, all with the same goal in mind - saving the lives.

Medical Corner: Obesity in DogsObesity is an extremely common problem in pets and, as with humans, is detrimental to the health of a dog. Obesity shortens a dog’s life and makes them more likely to develop disease
